We have mentioned this before, BUT!
No matter how often backing up data is discussed it still amazes me just how many people do not bother. This includes businesses and individuals. Here in the cave we have seen several sad cases again this week, photographs lost because of a dead hard drive. Special memories of a loved one, a new born, a relative now passed on.
Of course it is possible to recover data from a dead hard drive. We saw a quote recently for over £700. A bill that had to be paid as it was company accounts. But what happens if the hard drive is stolen, lost in a fire, dropped over the side as you climb onto your yacht?
Like all things in life it is good to have a fallback position, be that an external drive or online backup. Not only does it make sense, it is also cheaper than a divorce when you have to explain just where those photos of the latest rug rats have gone too. Programs like Cobian (free) make it easy to back up your files. External hard drives are cheaper than ever. A little bit of thought can save an awful lot of stress. Now just how old is that hard drive in your computer?
One other point, there are still a lot of calls claiming to come from security companies. They will tell you your computer is infected and then try to con you into letting them gain remote access to your computer. If you get a strange call about your computer just hang up, otherwise it could prove to be an expensive mistake!
